Winter FAQ’s

What are the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, offer a captivating celestial dance across the sky. This enchanting phenomenon is caused by the interaction between charged particles from the sun and the Earth's magnetic field. When these particles collide with the gases in the Earth's atmosphere, such as oxygen and nitrogen, they emit vibrant colours, creating dancing shapes of light in the night sky. The colours of the Northern Lights vary, ranging from shades of green to pink, and even red.

When is the best time to witness the Northern Lights with Northbound?

Each month from September to early April is considered favourable for seeing the Aurora in Tromsø. Here's a brief explanation:

September -October

As the nights grow darker from late August, September marks the beginning of the Aurora season. With mild temperatures and the gorgeous changing colours from summer to autumn, this is one of our favourite times to see the Northern Lights!

November - December

In late November the polar night sets in, the night’s grow longer and darker, the temperatures start to cool as winter begins to take over. The prolonged darker period helps viewing the Northern Lights, especially if they decide to show up earlier in the evening or later at night. Combine this with the possibility of a snow-covered landscape and it’s magical!

January - February

The pastel colours engulf Tromsø as the sun makes its journey back into our sky. Truly one of the most beautiful times to visit. Longer daylight hours combined with snowy dark nights create an amazing experience.

March - Early April

The tail end of the Northern Lights season still offers opportunities to witness the Aurora. While the nights start to become shorter, this is typically when Tromsø is at it’s prettiest. There should be plenty of snow for all your winter activities and it’s still very possible to see incredible aurora displays through March and early April.
